Fidelio
Sung in German with French and English subtitles
The triumph of marital love over tyranny is the central theme of Beethoven’s only opera, which had a slow genesis and originally appeared in a version entitled Leonore, in honour of his heroine who embodied the spirit of freedom and fidelity. Fidelio’s form places it in the German “singspiel” genre, a style whose distinctive trait is the alternation of spoken dialogue (not recitative) and singing. Here, the musician’s art of writing for the orchestra is deployed in majestic style right from the overture onwards. This hymn to freedom is also a formidable score for singers and a work which still occupies a special place in the repertoire due to its power and its feminist and political dimension.
