Cendrillon - Ballet de l’Opéra National de Lyon

When Maguy Marin revisited Perrault for the Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon over 30 years ago, her Cinderella was a woman who refused to accept the dictates of fate.

Dancers of Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon

In 1985, the year in which Cinderella was performed in Lyon, Maguy Marin was a well-known name. She is one of the leading lights of the new wave of choreographers which has flooded France. Classically trained Maguy Marin joined Maurice Béjart’s Ballet du XXe siècle before breaking free and setting up her own company. For this Cinderella, she uses masked performers, hovering between the grotesque and the poetic in a rocking horse and toyshop set. The dancers, led by Cinderella, adopt a hesitant disjointed way of walking like children who have shot up too fast and are ill-at-ease in their adult bodies. In this life-size dolls’ house, based on an idea devised by her faithful colleague Montserrat Casanova, Maguy Marin displays the theatre of emotions and grudges: goodies and baddies rub shoulders and she points the finger at male domination. Her Cinderella is quite clearly a thoroughly modern woman.
